The PS3 has certainly turned out to be the toughest gaming console for hackers, modders and jail-breakers. But recently, psx-scene.com came up with a USB device, which is aimed at allowing un-authorized games to be played on the PS3. For more about how this USB Mod works and if it even works, just keep reading!
Tell me more.
The USB is plugged in, while the console is off. As soon as you touch the power button to turn your PS3 on, you have to press the eject button as-well. Several beeps result and the jail-break is initiated. Plug-in the external storage drive that contains the ‘Backup’ file. After that you need to move to ‘Install Package Files’ (from the ‘Games’ tab). You start the ‘Backup Manager’ application and select a game from the list of games you have on the USB and once you choose a game, Backup Manager closes. Now you see that the game you chose is appearing under the ‘Games’ tab as it would have, if you had inserted the disc. More details here.
Why wouldn’t I get it even if it works?
Firstly, this piece of hardware costs a-lot (149AUD). Also once the USB mod is in place, I cannot connect to the PSN or play games online. If you are thinking online gaming is crap, you are wrong. It’s a whole new world. Thirdly, I am perfectly comfortable with buying original PS3 games because they aren’t that expensive anyway. Finally and most importantly, moral values my friends.
PS3-Busted?
To cut the long story short, no. As soon as this jail break came out, Tech-gurus predicted that just like previous PS3 mods this would be another failure. And yes it is a failure. Sony has released Firmware update 3.42, which is aimed at making the USB-Mod useless and so it does. Add all that into the fact that Sony also won the Legal Battle against those retailers who were selling the USB Mod. So if you were thinking of getting a PS3 and the USB Mod, so that you could play PS3 games for cheap, you better think again.
